UK HEATWAVE ON THE WAY
Lockdown Brits get mini heatwave
A MINI heatwave with temperatures touching 20C is heading to Britain this weekend after a week of wintry weather.
But chances of showers until the warm front hits has led to the Environment Agency putting out 30 flood alerts across southern England.
While temperatures will struggle to top 12C today, forecasters say the weather will settle by tomorrow.
And despite families being stuck indoors due to the coronavirus lockdown, it could be up to 10 degrees warmer in some parts of the country.
The shift in wind direction will bring milder air over the weekend.
The east of the country will see the best weather as parts of London could reach highs of 19C, while Cambridge could top 18C on Sunday.
In the north of the country, temperatures will be considerably warmer after bouts of wintery weather and snow warnings last week. Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said: “We will see spells of sunshine, cloudier skies at times and a few showers may affect eastern England, eastern Scotland and maybe northern Scotland as well, but the vast majority will be dry.”
The weekend could set the scene for the hottest April on record, as bookies slash the odds to just 2-1 from 3-1.
Alex Apati, from Ladbrokes, said: “The temperatures have taken another turn but it is good news for Brits who could soon be basking in recordbreaking sunshine.”
But the summer-like temperatures may only last until early next week.
Brian Gaze, of The weather outlook forecast website, said: “In the northwest, it could turn wet as Atlantic disturbances begin to push in.
“Temperatures are slightly below average for the time of year but near where they should be.
“Towards the end of the week, highs will be peaking at 10C in the south with the north looking at 6C to 8C.”
