SUN lovers flock to the seaside on the last super-hot 24 hours of the heatwave, with highs yesterday reaching 28C in Wales.

WATER firm chiefs have been blasted for threatening hosepipe bans despite one of the wettest winters ever.

Unions are accusing “fatcat” bosses of trying to push problems in their underfunded systems on to the ratepayer.

The GMB’S Mick Ainsley said: “This warning from Water UK about gardeners using water is more than a bit outrageous.

“It comes after one of the wettest autumn and winters in living memory. It rained constantly between September and March.”

The union has demanded the Government call water bosses to Parliament to explain their actions when there was so much flooding across the UK.

Pressure

Last week Water UK urged people to stop using sprinklers on their lawns and gardens.

The trade association claimed demand for water has shot up during the lockdown – piling pressure on reserves after “the driest May since records began”.

Water UK chief executive Christine Mcgourty said: “Just small changes through the day will make all the difference.

“The less water we use at peak times, the less likely it is that water will be under pressure.” BRITAIN is set to sizzle through six more heatwaves this summer thanks to a series of Spanish “heat plumes”.

Leon Brown, from The Weather Company, said: “These periods would each see temperatures of at least 28C.

“That is 5C up on 23C average daily peak temperatures in summer in the south.”
