First they came for our Winstons and we did not speak out.. then they came for our Baden-powells and we did not speak out..

A STATUE of The Wurzels’ iconic late frontman Adge Cutler has been “vandalised” with googly eyes, sparking fan fury.

A MEMORIAL to The Wurzels’ late frontman was “vandalised” in the latest bout of statue-targeting madness.

Pranksters stuck a pair of googly eyes on the tribute to the West Country band’s original singer, Adge Cutler.

The bronze statue has stood since 2016 outside the pub in Nailsea, Somerset, where the cider-swilling folk group recorded their first tracks 50 years ago.

And the family of the singer, who died in a car crash in 1974, are devastated by the disrespectful act.

His nephew, John, posted on Facebook: “I am not happy about this at all.”

It is the most bizarre target yet in the war against statues that has seen monuments to figures such as Winston Churchill and Scouts founder Robert Badenpowell come under threat of attack. Others agreed the Wurzels damage was a senseless act of vandalism. Lyn Greenwood posted: “I hope whoever has done this returns Adge to normal and as punishment gives him a wash and brush up.”

However, some could see the funny side.

Fan Rich West posted: “I bet Adge would have laughed his head off at that.”

The Somerset singer was affectionately known as Adge because of the initials AJ from his real name, Alan John Cutler.

He died aged 43 when he crashed his MGB sports car on a roundabout in Chepstow, Gwent, following a Wurzels concert.

The band went on to have their greatest chart successes following his death with huge hits like The Combine Harvester and I Am A Cider Drinker. They are still touring.

The 4ft tall statue of Adge was created by local sculptor Roy Cleeves and was unveiled by

Adge’s brother Dave and nephew John.

It is believed the googly eyes were stuck on with Blu Tack so could be easily removed.
