Ugly-looking fish a winner for dinners

AN ugly-looking breed of fish called “whiff” is causing quite a stink at chippies as fans cannot get enough of the stuff.

Also known as megrim, the white fish is competing with traditiona­l cod and haddock.

There has been a surge in interest of native fish, even though some are among the ugliest beasts ever netted.

But whiff – along with gurnard, weever and spider crab – taste better than they look.

Fish expert Rodney Anderson said: “For decades celebrity chefs have telling consumers to more British fish.”

He said the public is “loving our home-caught fish”, adding: “It takes pressure off fish like tuna caught far away.”

The UK exports 70% of fish caught in its waters but the market has been closed in been enjoy recent months. The coronaviru­s crisis has triggered a demand for home-delivered local fish soaring by 950%.

Mr Anderson launched listings website Call-4fish which linked customers with individual fishermen and boats.

Customer Alison Raynsford, from Plymouth, regularly buys a £19 box. She said: “It’s like a treasure trove. You’re never sure what’s inside.”

John Molnar, owner of The Cod’s Scallops in Nottingham, which was recently crowned the UK’S best fish and chip shop, sells gurnard and chips for £7.50.

He said: “When I first opened nine years ago 95% of fish was cod and haddock.

“Now they are 65%, as underused fish are getting very popular.”
