The fine time for a crash

- ■ by ANTONY THROWER antony.thrower@dailystar.co.uk

MOST road smashes take place in good conditions and at fairly low speeds.

Just over 80% happen in fine weather with no winds, and 63% between 21mph and 30mph.

Marc Copper, of insurers Carole Nash, said: “When driving at low speeds, accidents can happen, and it’s always important to be as vigilant on a 30mph limit road in the sun as you would be on a motorway in the pouring rain.”

Only 11% of crashes occur in rain, and 0.5% in snow, says data from the Department for Transport.

There are on average 462 road collisions in Britain every day.

POLICE were yesterday searching for an armed homeless man dubbed a real-life Rambo famous for his warning: “Don’t push it.” Yves Rausch, 31, is on the run in camouflage clothing, with pistols and a bow and arrow.

He disarmed four officers after threatening them with a gun in Oppenau, Germany, before disappearing into the Black Forest.

Residents were told to stay inside and lock their windows while drivers were warned not to stop for hitchhikers as he remained at large. Hundreds of armed police officers are now combing the rough forested terrain with the support of sniffer dogs and helicopters to track down the hermit. Just like Rambo, Sylvester Stallone’s Vietnam war vet character who goes on the run from police, he is reportedly heavily armed with an arsenal of weapons. The film character famously warned his enemies: “Don’t push it or I’ll give you a war you won’t believe.”

A spokesman for Baden-wurttemberg Police said: “The German citizen has had no permanent residence and has appeared to the police on several occasions in the past, among other things due to a violation of the weapons law.”

Schools and kindergartens in Oppenau were closed yesterday “due to the current dangerous situation”.

Earlier a police spokesman said suspect had appeared co-operative the on

Sunday when police tracked him down, but then “suddenly he pulled out his pistol and aimed at the officers”.

He added: “They were totally stunned. They had no chance to react to the dangerous situation.”

Drones are also being used in the search. Meanwhile, Stallone has hinted there could be a sixth film in the gritty series as he promoted an extended version of Rambo: Last Blood.

The 74-year-old told fans: “See the real journey, you don’t just turn this off (he could be back).

“Much respect, Sly.”
