HUBBLE BOOK

Need some inspiration? This incredible book marks 30 years of the world’s most famous telescope. Some of the photos are jaw dropping.

CELESTRON ASTROMASTER 76

Here’s a great beginner’s telescope that comes with a sturdy tripod, a mount, two lenses and a star finder scope to line up target objects more easily. You’ll soon be spotting the likes of Jupiter’s moons.

WITH Comet Neowise on view and the planets giving us an amazing display, it’s a great time to get into astronomy.

PHILIP’S PLANISPHERE

This clever device rotates so you can quickly work out which stars are on display for any given night of the year. Much easier than trying to use a paper star chart, it’s plastic and should last you for years.

RAIL staff are being investigated over claims they have been shooting seagulls.

Two Avanti West Coast workers have reportedly been suspended from their jobs for allegedly gunning the protected birds at the train station in Carlisle, Cumbria.

Gulls are protected by law and it is illegal to kill them or destroy their nests.

The firm confirmed an launched after receiving reports but declined to give further details. A spokesman said: “We are aware of an allegation and are currently investigating it.”

The RSPCA confirmed it had been informed of the allegation on July 2.

The animal charity said:

“We are so grateful to people who report suspected animal suffering to us. We would like to reassure people we will always look into any complaints made to us about animal welfare.

“A lot of the time issues will be dealt with by advice and education and it is not always appropriate to publicise this information for legal reasons.”

Authorities can issue licences for seagulls to be investigation killed and their destroyed “if there non-lethal solution”.

A delay in licences for gull control being granted by Natural England has led to fears of a boom in the seagull population and a rise in attacks on people.

SKYWATCHER FLASHLIGHT

Use a normal torch outdoors at night and the white light will wreck your night vision. This one gives off red light, allowing you to adjust your ’scope… or find snacks and a beer in the dark.
