GHOST hunters believe they were spooked by one of the Kray twins at Britain’s most haunted prison.

Sleuths specialising in investigating supernatural events heard a man groaning in the gangsters’ former cell at HMP Shepton Mallet.

Other strange activities included swearing, a female voice and ghostly figures in the morgue.

The team from Lost Entity Paranormal said: “Shadows seen in many areas, light anomalies, a woman’s voice heard.

“Unusually cold gusts of air with a static charge surrounding us within the hospital block and A Wing, guests and team being touched by an unseen force.

“A man’s groan was heard by Tracey and Leanne in the Kray cell.

“Sophie and guest Matt experienced an ‘ odd feeling’ on A Wing, equipment validated the presence of some ■ sort of energy. This was the same area Caroline felt a push earlier in the night, Sophie and the guest unaware of this at the time.”

The Somerset prison, which closed in 2013 after 400 years, was home to East End gangsters Reggie and Ronnie Kray back in the early 1950s.

They were serving sentences for assaulting a police officer while AWOL from National Service.

The Grade II listed prison now stages ghost tours and creepy overnight sleepovers.

In 2017 two women claimed they caught the ghostly hand of Ronnie on a selfie in the twin’s former cell. Lisa White and Cheryl Matthews were on a Haunted Happenings tour when they took the photo.

Ronnie, 61, died in 1995 after having a heart attack.

Brother Reggie died from cancer aged 66 in 2000.
