Desperate search for knife killer

A KNIFE maniac who killed a man and stabbed seven more people in a 90- minute rampage was being hunted last night.

A man and woman were critically ill in hospital after being attacked by the knifeman.

And last night police released CCTV footage of a man they want to speak with in relation to the gruesome attacks.

The assaults began at 12.30am yesterday at Constitution Hill in Birmingham city centre.

Police were still attending that crime scene when the attacker struck again at two more locations as he headed to the city’s Gay Village, where he slashed his final victim at 2am.

Chief Supt Steve Graham said the incidents appeared to be “random”, with “no suggestion” they were linked to terrorism.

He said: “A man has tragically died. Another man and a woman have suffered serious injuries and five others have also been injured, although their injuries are not thought to be life- threatening.” In the footage released by police, a man is shown wearing a darkcoloured peaked hat and zip- up hoodie with white drawstrings.

A black- handled kitchen knife with a serrated blade was recovered from the one of the attack scenes but it was not certain if it was used by the killer, or if he had more than one weapon.

Bar owner Savvas Sfrantzis, 64, saw the knifeman stab a woman before calmly walking off.

He said: “He put the knife in her neck and walked off.

“He didn’t panic. He didn’t look like he was worried. He looked relaxed. He looked like he didn’t care for anything. You could see the blade in his hands.”
