HARRY WON’T CARRY THE LOAD ANY MORE
HARRY KANE has been warned he may no longer be the main man for England.
The captain has scored 32 goals in 46 internationals and remains on course to break Wayne Rooney’s all- time record of 53.
England’s 1- 0 triumph over Iceland was just their third competitive win in the last three years when Kane has not scored.
But Southgate,
( pictured below with Kane at the final whistle) said: “Harry is a supreme goalscorer and is critical to the way we play. Equally we have some tremendous threats which will be clear as the next few months develop, with Raheem ( Sterling) in particular.
“We’ve spoken about Jadon ( Sancho), Mason ( Greenwood) is coming through, Marcus Rashford, of course, is at home, Phil ( Foden) and Mason Mount will score goals as well. w
“The nice ni thing is that t we won’t won be leaning just on Harry Ha and I think thin games gam like the wi win in
Spain show goals can come from elsewhere.”
Southgate replaced Kane with Greenwood in the 78th minute.
Kane, 27, had looked sluggish and the coach added: “We needed to press from the front and Harry’s had such a limited training schedule that we were going to be asking too much of him to continue to press, hold the ball up and be the goal threat.”
Southgate is set to experiment with a 3- 4- 3 formation in Denmark tomorrow night as he considers using it for next summer’s European Championship.
He said: “The most important thing will be to really assess who can do that, to keep the balance of the team right.
“It is impossible to expect them to be at their best, given not only the time since their last competitive games but also the shortage of training minutes.
“So the last part to come is that sharpness around the final third.
“We can’t just be rigid. We don’t want to stick to one way of playing if we are knocking on the door and not really getting the number of shots on goal that we wanted – as was happening in Iceland.”
