WOOLIES PIC ’ N’ MIX- UP!

New Woolworths rumours a hoax

TWITTER users were fooled into thinking Woolworths was making a comeback by a hoax tweet.

A post yesterday that said the retailer, which closed in the UK in 2009, was returning with three stores next year sparked wild celebrations on social media.

The account, which claimed to be from the company, started the pic’n’mix- up by posting: “Here to save 2020. Woolworths is coming back to your high street, as a physical store.

“A couple of legal things to get sorted, but we’re full steam ahead at Woolworths HQ.”

But the fake account was pulling the Woolies over people’s eyes.

And the Very Group, which owns the rights to Woolies, rubbished the rumour, saying: “Twitter account Ukwoolworths is not connected to The Very Group.”

Ray Walsh, a scam expert at firm Proprivacy, said: “It’s not unsurprising that huge numbers of people around the UK have fallen for fake news surrounding the reopening of Woolworths.

“The brand was a much- loved part of UK shopping history. This is an important reminder of how fake social media accounts can spread false information.”

One tweeter wrote: “Woolworths thing is a hoax... as if 2020 couldn’t get any crueller.”

WE’RE all in need of a good pickmeup at the moment.

And yesterday for a few fleeting seconds we received that glimmer of good news on Twitter.

Among all the doom and gloom on the high street, a miracle had occurred. Much- loved and missed store Woolworths was set to make a comeback.

You could almost hear the nostalgia whirring around our brains.

But before we even got the chance to select our fantasy pic’n’mix selection for our return visit, our hopes were cruelly dashed.

It turns out some sad act had masterminded a bizarre hoax, most likely from their parents’ bedroom.

Seriously, do these morons have nothing better to do?

It’s just more proof that social media is a waste of everyone’s time.
