£5k for breach of rule
FINES for first-time lockdown rule-breakers could rise to £5,000 in a new crackdown.
Government ministers are said to be discussing the increase to “improve compliance”.
A source said: “The level of fines in the UK is significantly lower than elsewhere. We are looking at whether they are sufficient.”
Fixed penalty notices for individuals are normally £200 for a first offence in England.
Earlier this week Baroness Dido Harding, head of the NHS Test and Trace programme, claimed 20,000 people a day were failing to isolate when ordered to by contact tracers.
A FURTHER 1,014 people have died from Covid-19, bringing the UK’S death toll to 111,264, while the number of new cases stands at 19,114, says the Department of Health.
