AN Air Ambulance doctor who was almost killed when a van smashed into her was saved by her own colleagues.

Intensive care consultant Dr Patricia Mills was walking her dog Ralph when the vehicle hit them from behind.

She suffered multiple injuries including a broken sternum, fractured vertebrae, internal bleeding and a dangerous rib break.

But she still managed driver what to do.

She recalled: “As they called 999 I remember saying: ‘Tell them I’m major trauma positive,’ as I was really concerned one of my broken ribs would have punctured one of my organs.”

The East Anglian Air Ambulance crew of paramedic Liam Sagi, Dr Chris Chadwick and pilots Paul Smith and Jonny Bushell were stunned to find Dr Mills was the casualty when they landed at the scene in Newmarket, Suffolk.

Patricia, 52, joked: “I’ve never been so pleased to see Liam in all my life.”

She spent 10 days in intensive care but is now fully recovered and back flying with the air ambulance.

The medic said: “I feel incredibly lucky to have benefited from this amazing lifeline. I knew I was in the very best hands.”
