Recruitment suspended

- Dear James,

IN October I was offered a new job, but when they told me I had been successful I was given a different start date to the one the interviewer told me. Then the start date changed a further two times, so I didn’t hand in my notice. I have just heard from the company’s HR department and they said they are no longer offering the role to me due to the pandemic. If I had handed in my notice, I would have been left unemployed. Do I have any rights here?

Aimee, Stockport

James says:

IT is challenging enough navigating your way through the recruitment and selection process successfully at the best of times, but the pandemic has added a whole new range of obstacles that job seekers have to contend with.

And, unfortunately, this uncertainty

has affected employers just as much as it has job seekers, if not more so. From what you have said, the company you accepted the job offer from has been acting with the best of intentions and it sounds like they really wanted to employ you.

So I would conclude that, despite their efforts, the position you applied for is one that they can no longer justifiably hire for right now.

I think you need to be thankful that you didn’t hand in your notice.
