Tackling suicide

Van de Beek poised to quit United

MARK HUGHES believes football can do a “huge job” in raising awareness about suicide in young men.

Former Manchester City, Fulham and Stoke boss Hughes is backing a new campaign, Shining A Light On Suicide, aimed at tackling the biggest killer of men under 49.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has joined with the League Managers Association to launch the initiative, while there is also a new 20-minute Zero Suicide Alliance video to help club bosses.

Hughes said: “For the most part football does a huge job on a list of difficult subjects.

“I’ve had team-mates who struggled with mental health, who lost their lives to suicide as well.

“We need more understanding of how we cast a shadow sometimes as managers when we make decisions.”

Ex-wales team-mate Gary Speed tragically hung himself in 2011, while suicide is an issue for young players dropping out of the game.

Former Crawley boss Dermot Drummy also took his own life in 2017 at the age of 56.

HUGO LLORIS has warned Tottenham must win “decisive” games to keep their season on track.

The Spurs captain says they must forget losing the derby at Arsenal last Sunday and instead focus on the rest of the season.

Lloris said: “We don’t have time to think much as we have the Europa League on Thursday and Aston Villa next Sunday.

“We must stay strong. It’s not the moment to be down, there’s 10 games to go, many points to get.”

Lucas Moura said the squad could not even celebrate Erik Lamela’s rabona goal in the 2-1 loss.

Moura said: “In a derby, it is special and he is an amazing player. It was an unbelievable goal.

“But we didn’t win because with this goal, if we had won, it would have been even more special.”

OUTCAST Donny van de Beek wants to quit after less than one season with Manchester United.

The Holland international has started just two Premier League games this season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
