OLLIE HAS EYE ON HARRY

- ■ by PAUL BROWN

ENGLAND new boy Ollie Watkins has gone from seeking tips on Harry Kane’s routine to joining him in the Three Lions squad.

And the Aston Villa striker plans to make such an impression this week that he emerges as one of Kane’s long-term rivals for a starting spot.

As an Arsenal fan growing up, Watkins idolised Thierry Henry and admits he has tried to model his game on the French icon.

But it was Kane he wanted pointers on three years ago from England’s strength and conditioning coach Ben Young, a mutual friend.

Watkins said: “He came to Brentford for a day and I was asking what Kane’s routine was like. A few years later, I’m here training with him. It’s a bit of a shock.

“I just asked how he works, how he prepares for a training session.

“It was about not just having breakfast and waiting around but getting in the gym, waking my body up so I’m ready to go and be the best I can in training.

“I just try and take small percentages from everywhere and put them together and hopefully they add up.”

The challenge for Watkins (right) now is to one day take Kane’s place in the England team.

Asked how he feels about that, he said: “That’s a tough question to answer. I couldn’t speak highly enough of him.

“There are a lot of other talented strikers as well. It’s going to be hard playing for England for a start, let alone trying to take a position.”

Just six years ago Watkins was playing non-league football for Weston-super-mare.

The 25-year-old said: “Weston played a big part in my development. Realising how much it meant to people with mortgages to pay.

“It’s been a great journey.”
