MAC WON’T ROAR

New coach does not expect Major miracle

- By NEIL MCLEMAN

RORY MCILROY’S new coach has warned not to expect any miracles from him at the Masters this week.

The Ulsterman turned to Pete Cowen for help with his game last month after sliding down to No.11 in the world.

Mcilroy, 31, has admitted he lost his swing chasing the extra yardage gained by Bryson Dechambeau.

And before the first Major of the season starts on Thursday, pundit Nick Dougherty said: “I spoke to Pete Cowen and he did say to me, ‘Don’t expect any miracles because there are no quick fixes here – it’s an on-going process.’

“There’s no magic powder that’s been sprinkled on top of his golf ball to go to Augusta National. I’d be concerned if I heard from a coach, ‘Expect something big this week’.

“They are looking at really simple things, ‘Go play, Rory, enjoy Augusta.’

“I think that will help. If he got in there with this 12 different things going on in his golf swing, he’s got no hope.

“The reason that Rory is going to get back to the top is because they have a long-term plan.

“It won’t take him long because he’s a supreme talent but Pete’s point is he’s not necessarily going to turn up at

Augusta and win by 10 shots or anything like that.

“The potential is always there for him to do it but none of us expect it at the moment.

“His biggest asset this year is that the burden of expectation is far less. Maybe also from him.”

Mcilroy will be making his seventh attempt to complete his career Grand Slam at the Masters.

“It’s the ultimate list to join,” said Sky Sports Golf expert Dougherty.

“And if you do you’re a legend.

“Rory, with four Majors, is a great of the modern game but 50 years from now he won’t be a legend unless he’s on that list.”
