BENN BLAST ON TROLLS

- By CHRIS MCKENNA

CONOR BENN admits dealing with social media trolls makes him think he would have been better off cooking on the BBQ Down Under than looking to fire himself to a world title.

Being the son of a famous fighting father means Benn has to deal with more online abuse than most.

That is why he got in touch with Campbell Hatton ahead of his recent debut to offer him some advice.

But Benn, son of two-weight world champion Nigel, sometimes wishes he stayed in Australia with his dad rather than following him into the sport.

“I reached out because I like Campbell,” said Benn, who faces Samuel Vargas this weekend in a welterweight clash at the Copper Box in London.

“I saw comments people were making about him, it pains me to see it.

“Some of the stuff I see makes me sick to the core, it really got me going.

“There is such vile stuff on Twitter from real scumbags and it gets my back up.

“I remember how I felt when I was getting the same treatment so for him to be getting it now, it upsets me.

“If I am honest, if I could go back now, I probably would have stayed in Australia cooking on the BBQ with my dad, enjoying life and not having to worry.”

Unbeaten

Benn is heading into his 18th professional fight this weekend against Colombian Vargas, who floored Amir Khan in 2018 before losing on points.

The Essex-trained fighter is improving in every bout and his promoter Eddie Hearn is starting to talk up world-title fights – but he still wonders if he made the right career choice.

Benn added: “I do sometimes think I am mad for not choosing that life. “I’ve just got to win a world title. Then I’ll be a very happy man.”
