CANCEL culture in universities is “deeply unhealthy” and hinders free speech, says the new head of the students’ watchdog.
Lord Wharton of Yarm, chairman of the Office for Students, said feminism, transgender issues, climate change and politics were areas where a “free, open dialogue and free flow of opinion” needed protecting.
The Tory peer, now running the Department for Education body that regulates higher education in England, said universities risked becoming places where “certain views are seen to be, whether formally or informally, acceptable and others are not”.
Moves to “no platform” speakers such as the former Home Secretary Amber Rudd – whose invitation to speak at an Oxford University society was suddenly withdrawn last year – were “ridiculous” he said.
Nonsense
The 37-year-old peer said exposure to different opinions was central to a quality student experience. He warned he will use his new powers, including fining institutions and banning degree courses from recruiting new students, if universities fail to uphold free speech rights.
“Free speech is so crucially important that it would be a nonsense to take on these powers and then fail to use them,’’ he said.
He urged students to come up with their own “organic solutions” to defend freedom of expression – while stressing that did not extend to “hate speech” and “racist or targeted” remarks.
Lord Wharton also called on universities to do more to boost their intake of white working-class boys as the numbers are “horrendously” low.
