Faulty finish has Fleetwood frustrated

- By NEIL SQUIRES

TOMMY FLEETWOOD balanced the books yesterday with a 70 that sends him into the weekend at level par but was left frustrated by a clumsy finish.

Fleetwood, who made a hole in one in the first round, rattled off four birdies on his front nine.

But he could not continue the momentum on the back nine, finding the water at 13 and the

■ trees at the last. It all means he is level with fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick, who was also unable to cash in on a fast start and had to settle for 70.

Tyrrell Hatton dropped back to two over after firing his approach shot into the flowers at the back of the 13th green and having to declare his ball unplayable. He doubled bogeyed the hole on his way to a 74.

Matt Wallace is on the same mark after a 72 yesterday which, after a superb birdie at the par-4 10th, also saw a double bogey after he found the water at the 13th.

Meanwhile, Bernd Wiesberger staked his claim for a place in the Ryder Cup team with his best-ever round at Augusta. The world No.54 started his second round with a hat-trick of birdies – and made his seventh on the 15th – in his six-under 66.

Wiesberger has never missed the cut at Augusta but had never broken 70 in his 20 previous rounds. He opened with a 74.

The Austrian, who is just outside the automatic places for the European team, said: “I’ve been playing really solid golf yesterday and today. Just today I kept the mistakes off my card and made my best-ever round here.

“I guess it has to happen to us all eventually and it was my moment yesterday.”

American Tony Finau bogeyed the last but still ended his second round right in the hunt at four under after signing for a six-under 66 yesterday.
