KHAN-DO ATTITUDE

Benn’s sights on Amir next after 90-second knockout

- By CHRIS MCKENNA

CONOR BENN first has to catch up on the night feeds with his baby boy – then he wants to end Amir Khan’s career.

The Essex-based welterweight put on a stunning display to wipe out Samuel Vargas inside 90 seconds at the Copper Box Arena in London on Saturday night.

It was a ruthless performance from the 24-year-old son of former twoweight champion Nigel who is improving at a rapid pace.

That is down to hard work in the gym with trainer Tony Sims, but he will have a few days off now to spend with four-month-old Eli.

Benn said: “I will need a break because I want to emotionally spend time with my son, I want to spend time with my family.

“I only had three days off when he was born and I’ve got a lot of night feeds to catch up on.”

But Benn is not planning on hanging around. He wants Khan next, the former light-welterweight champion who has not fought since July 2019.

‘The Destroyer’ mocked Khan for spending too much time on a reality TV series and wants to face him next.

He said: “Give me Amir Khan. I know he’s too busy on reality TV. If he wants it, he can have it.

“I can deal with pressure. I can cope with it. I can live with it, no problem.

I’m one of the most rapidly improved fighters globally.”

Benn’s claim on his improvement isn’t far from the truth – he is now 18-0 but looking like a more rounded boxer with each fight. Vargas was well past his best but Benn got him out far quicker than the likes of Errol Spence Jnr, Danny Garcia and Khan himself.

Benn said: “You are talking levels and it shows what level I’m at.

“When I hit him and the shot landed, I thought, ‘Alright, this is going to end a lot quicker than I thought.’

“I told you lot I would knock him out in the first round and what happened? I knocked him out in the first round.”

Dad Nigel said before the fight he wants to see him in with US former world champion Shawn Porter next.

Benn added: “Any of them, give me Amir Khan and give me Shawn Porter. I will go Stateside if I have to, it don’t bother me.”

Khan praised Benn in a tweet but was quick to play down a clash.

He said: “Conor well done. Great kid, wish him the best. At his age I was a world champ. Maybe if he had some belts that fight would make sense but he’s got a long way to go yet.”

Meanwhile, Shannon Courtenay won the WBA bantamweight title on points after a bruising battle with Australian Ebanie Bridges on the undercard.
