Gareth Southgate has been warned Scotland will be “simple” and “painful” opponents who “kick long balls” when they clash at Wembley.

He said: “Scotland played in a simple way – long balls and tackles – and it was painful for us.

“Scotland kicked long balls at us and we needed a good defensive line. We had to get in a good mental shape to face Scotland.

“We knew they would tackle and be aggressive. They did all that.

“The Scots play until the last minutes.

“They pushed and pressed. You need a good defence.”
