Buendia looks to Europe

- ■ by JAMES NURSEY

EMI BUENDIA wants to fire Aston Villa into Europe after joining in a club record £33m deal.

Villa have broken their transfer record to snap up Buendia from promoted Norwich, where he provided 15 goals and 16 assists last term.

The Argentine attacking midfielder opted for Villa despite interest from long-term suitors Arsenal.

He wants to help Dean Smith’s side climb the table from 11th to qualify for Europe.

Buendia said: “It is a really good step for me. I have really good feelings about the future. I think we will have a very good year for the whole team and club and also the fans.

“I want to help the team with everything – with goals, assists and work.

“The project and vision of the club is amazing. We are looking to play in the next year in Europe.”

Buendia has displaced Ollie Watkins as Villa’s record buy in a deal which could rise to nearly £40m.

He will join keeper and fellow Argentine Emi Martinez at Villa Park.

Buendia added: “He already told me a lot about the club and the city. A lot of very good things.

“The last few weeks we have been speaking. He was trying to convince me to come here.”
