UP AN’ ARTEM

Supersub nicks it late

- By SIMON BIRD

UKRAINE snatched a quarter-final tie with England with a goal in the last seconds of extra time.

Sub Artem Dovbyk nodded home in the 120th minute as a penalty shoot-out loomed, with Manchester City left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko providing the cross.

It finally broke 10-man Sweden and ensured Andriy Shevchenko will lead his team out against Gareth Southgate on Saturday.

Data analysts speculated England would have a 70 per cent chance of overcoming Ukraine and 60 per cent chance over the Swedes.

Sweden last played England at the 2018 World Cup, losing 2-0 to Harry Maguire and Dele Alli goals. Ukraine have only beaten England once in their seven meetings.

The opener last night came from a West Ham and Manchester City combination.

Andriy Yarmolenko’s trickery opened up space on the right and he bent a clever cross with the outside of his foot to the back post.

City’s Zinchenko was lurking unmarked and volleyed an unstoppable shot across goal past Robin Olsen, deputy for England keeper Jordan Pickford at Everton last season.

Sweden coach Janne Andersson has never raised his voice during the tournament, according to his players, but his patience was tested in the first half. Roman Yarmechuk

exchanged passes with Yarmolenko, forcing a save from Olsen.

Sweden’s Emil Forsberg grabbed an equaliser against the run of play before half-time and delivered an outstanding performance.

The RB Leipzig striker shot from 25 yards and beat Georgiy Bushchan with the help of a deflection off Illia Zabarnyi.

After the break Forsberg was leading the charge and hit the post, then the bar, with curling right-foot efforts.

Sweden suffered a setback in extra time when Marcus Danielson was sent off.

Ref Daniel Orsato reviewed his thigh-high, game-ending contact on Artem Besedin after winning the ball and showed red.
