UNTIL the 1970s, Barnsley Bitter was a much-loved bitter in its home territory.

Then the brewery closed, much to the consternation of locals including Michael Parkinson.

However, 2003 saw Acorn Brewery open and, using the same yeast strain as the original Barnsley Bitter, this proud beery legend was brought back to life.

The result is a gleaming, copper-coloured and full-bodied old-school bitter with a malt-flecked flurry of notes on the nose, which are joined by hints of roastiness, chocolate and citrus.

Each swig – this is a beer to drink deeply of, rather than sip – reveals more rich malt, toffee, biscuity graininess and an undercurrent of light citrus before an intensely bitter finish.

Bet Parky likes it.
