LISTEN UP
KSI / All Over The Place ★★★★
AS the title suggests the Youtuber turned pop star serves a smorgasboard of ideas into this full-length record. Whether it’s gritty social commentary (The Moment), lighter reflections on celebrity (Madness), straight-up pop magnificence (Patience) or sun-kissed reggae (No
Pressure), yes KSI can do it all.
JOHN MAYER / Sob Rock ★★★★★
IF the American Gigolo-aping artwork isn’t a big enough hint, then the first few bars of Sob Rock will scream the 1980s.
Last Train Home could have been the soundtrack to an early Tom Cruise film, and there’s waft of Daft Punk to the compact grooviness of New Light. Naturally his guitar is spectacular but the songs are even better and Wild Blue is a long-lost Dire Straits classic that never was.
TONES AND I / Welcome To The Madhouse
★★★ FOR once the usually ubiquitous Dance Monkey is absent, but the Aussie still delivers earworms aplenty on this strong debut.
There’s a naivety to her home-spun arrangements, contradicted by a sophisticated vocal range which makes highlights Won’t Sleep and perky antidepressant anthem
Lonely endearingly alluring.
GARY KEMP / INSOLO
CLEARLY making up for lost time, Kemp’s first solo work in 25 years is an epic homage to his many influences. Inspired by 70s rock, highlights including Too Much sound like instant classics, whereas the orchestral title track veers into prog-musical territory. But Gary can’t escape his innate pop sensibility and Ahead Of The Game should have been a Top 10 Spandau Ballet hit.
