The curse of the sequel returns in this exhausting follow-up to the 2013 Stone Age family comedy.
The animation is sharp but the charm of the original is lost in an over-stuffed and overly wacky script.
This time, caveman Grug (voiced by Nicolas Cage) and his wife Ugga (Catherine Keener) stumble across the Bettermans, a more evolved couple voiced by Peter Dinklage and Leslie Mann.
The culture clash results in lame Flintstones-style visual gags, romantic troubles for daughter Eep (Emma Stone) and boyfriend Guy (Ryan Reynolds), and a frenetic plot involving a giant mandrilla, a gang of monkeys and an elderly action heroine.
