It’s our song of praise

- By JULIE STOTT

ENORMOUS victory highs and the crushing heartache of losing will inevitably mark this year’s World Cup.

But there are some things that will produce memories to last a lifetime for fans lucky enough to be there.

One will certainly be Fiji’s iconic pre-match hymn, Noqu Masu, being sung by players in a circle.

They are visibly emotional as they sing the haunting hymn that will have the hairs standing up on fans’ necks.

But Kevin Naiqama says it gets them ready for battle far better than a hakastyle war dance could.

He said: “Our faith is a big part of us all so we wanted to share that every time Fiji is seen on the world stage with a hymn rather than a war dance.”

Naiqama was in floods of tears during a TV interview when Fiji knocked New Zealand out of the 2017 World Cup quarter-finals.

He said: “I just get overwhelmed with emotion and I’m not afraid to show it.

“If I want to cry I will do, but I’m not the only one. It just shows how proud we are to represent Fiji.”
