£72M ARMY LASERS TAKE ON JIHADIS
Hi-tech weapons tested
LASER weapons are being trialled by Army and Navy chiefs to fight drone attacks.
The Star Wars-style gadgets, part of a £72.5million scheme, could be in service within a decade.
The use of drones by Islamic State extremists in Iraq and Syria showed these weapons are “very much needed”, expert Justin Bronk said. Bronk, from the Royal United Services Institute think-tank, said: “The technology (of laser weapons) is maturing rapidly.”
Trials are set to begin in 2023 of laser and radio-frequency weapons.
