Merse: Please help me God.. I hate myself

PAUL’S GAMBLING HELL

- ■ by JERRY LAWTON

TV football pundit Paul Merson broke down on Good Morning Britain reliving his £7million gambling nightmare.

The former England and Arsenal ace, inset, blew the cash after getting hooked on betting, booze and drugs.

Sky Sports star Paul,

53, sobbed yesterday as host Susanna Reid read an extract from his new memoir, Hooked.

It read: “I need to stop. I hate myself when I gamble. Please help me God.”

Paul, who has not touched cocaine for 27 years and alcohol for two, said: “It is sad. In lockdown it was scary. My brain was telling me, ‘I’ve saved enough for a deposit for a house to get out of rented accommodation.’ “But addiction talks to you and it’s like, ‘We’re not getting out of this, we’ll be in lockdown for ever. We need a house and the only way we’re going to do that is chasing the money.’ I lost everything.” Paul recently revealed that at the height of his playing career in the 90s his addictions spiralled out of control as he would “go all in”. jerry.lawton@dailystar.co.uk
