SICK ROB’S SOCIAL MEDIA SCAMMED
Rugby great targeted in Twitter con
CROOKS have set up fake social media profiles in the name of Rob Burrow to fleece money from his fans.
A Twitter account pretending to be the terminally ill Leeds Rhinos rugby league legend asked for cash via Paypal.
In a tweet, right, the dadof-three, 38, wrote: “They’ve been asking people to send money to an email account.
“Please don’t be the one who falls for the scumbags. Thanks everyone.” His wife
Lindsey said: “It’s shameful that somebody would try and capitalise on this and take money that is being raised for a good cause.
“We acted straight away and reported it. The person who tweeted deleted it.
“Fortunately, it’s the first time that we’ve come across anything like this. But it’s unbelievable that somebody would try to do that.”
The ex-england ace has been fundraising since he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019.
The debilitating condition causes muscles to waste away after a loss of nerve cells that control movement, speech and breathing.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham tackled the Great North Run at the weekend to raise money for the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease, in Leeds.
