BRAVE DRIVER’S RESCUE DASH TO BLAZING FLATS

- By TONI GUILLOT and LOTTIE O’NEILL

HERO delivery driver Julie Briggs raced into a burning block of flats to save an OAP.

The Asda worker had been visiting her parents on the 15th floor when she saw billowing smoke higher up.

The mum-of-two rang 999 and sprinted up four flights of stairs to help.

Quick-thinking Julie managed to wake an 81-year-old woman living in the flat and doused the fire on the balcony.

Julie, 37, said: “I really didn’t know what I was going to face or the extent of the fire.”

She extinguished blazing artificial grass on the balcony but some panes of glass had shattered in the intense heat.

Julie added: “I feared the balcony might have fallen off then and I panicked a bit.”

Fire crews said things could have been much worse if the supermarket worker hadn’t intervened so quickly in Priestfields, Middlesbrough.

She has now been nominated for an Asda service superstar award.
