Cas was close to eye loss
BRENDAN RODGERS has revealed Belgium international Timothy Castagne was almost blinded in one eye by his Euro 2020 horror injury.
The 25-year-old defender is back in action wearing a facemask but his Leicester boss revealed just how close he came to having his career ended.
Castagne was rushed to hospital in St Petersburg after a heavy collision with Daler Kuzyaev in a group match with Russia.
He underwent emergency surgery on an eye socket that was fractured in six places and he only escaped a brain injury by a matter of inches.
Rodgers said: “He was so close to losing his sight. It was incredible and how quickly he’s come back is real testament to Timothy and his mental strength.
“He hadn’t trained with the squad that long before we then had to put him in. But he’s shown immense mental fortitude.
“He didn’t even want to be protected in training.”
Castagne cost the Foxes £25m when he was signed from Atalanta last year as a direct replacement for Ben Chilwell.
Rodgers added: “He’s put the mask on, he’s comfortable and it was great to see him back.”
