ASCOT DARE TO BARE INVITE
Racier gear wanted in a rules shake-up
THE thigh’s the limit for Royal Ascot revellers today after racing bosses urged them to dress “daring”.
They are allowing hemline-lengths to rise over much of the course during this week’s five-day event.
The posh do’s official style guide even features photos of models in micro-minis.
Actress and model Greta Bellamacina, who is the festival’s fashion adviser, said: “Pull things out of your wardrobe that you may not have been daring enough to wear throughout the year.”
Top stylist Rachel Bakewell, who helped compile the guide, urged Ascot attendees to ditch the traditional full-length frocks, like that worn by Strictly’s Janette Manrara last year, right.
Rachel said: “This year we’ve really tried to shift the perception of what occasion dressing can be, using it as a form of self-expression, and pushing the boundaries in a more fashion forward direction.”
One photo in the guide shows a model in a thighskimming grey £150 Me and Em mini-dress, black £980 Jane Taylor hat and white £635 Paul and Joe shoes with racing stripes. Women can wear minis and platform heels, while men can go for Cuban shirts.
But the Royals will not have the chance to dress down.
All attendees in the Royal Enclosure have to wear dresses or skirts of “modest length, defined as falling just above the knee or longer”. Strapless, off-the-shoulder frocks are out and “midriffs must be covered”.
Even trouser suits should be “of full-length to the ankle”. Meanwhile, the fellas must wear black, grey or navy morning suits with matching top hats.
