DARWIN DELIGHTED TO JOIN KOP ‘MONSTERS’
DARWIN NUNEZ believes “dreams do come true” as he described the excitement of playing alongside Liverpool’s feared forward line of “monsters”.
Nunez yesterday posted a social media picture of himself touching the Liver Bird crest on his new shirt, with a mixture of pride and awe.
It is a mouth-watering prospect to see one of the most creative attacks in the game add a striker with a genuine goalscoring instinct. And Nunez, 22, is just as excited himself as every Liverpool fan.
He said: “To play alongside these monsters is going to be something really special for me because as a kid you dream of going far.
“I dreamt of being able to play in Europe but I didn’t expect to get as far as a great club like Liverpool. I’m hugely excited.”
Pinpointing the likes of Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Mo Salah, the former Benfica hitman added: “There are some top, top forwards here with great qualities.
“They are so experienced and the players themselves are going to help me too.” The ultimate Reds ‘monster’ was his countryman Luis Suarez, a hero for Nunez when he was just a kid in Uruguay dreaming of becoming a footballer to help his family.
And one of the first things he did when he arrived at the club’s Kirkby training ground was to take a picture of himself in front of a portrait of Suarez in action that adorns the walls there.
The two now play together for their country, with the former Liverpool striker even recommending Nunez to Barcelona a few years ago when he was a young forward who first arrived in Europe with Almeria.
And while they have not spoken since the deal was struck, Liverpool’s record signing, with his fee potentially rising to £85m, admitted he cannot resist sending the picture to his idol.
“I’ll give him a call or send him a photo that I’ve taken where he’s there in the background,” he said.
Nunez promised in his first interview to deliver more trophies to the club and added: “I’m going to be here for many years, this has only just started for me.”
