Music has helped me fight grief

CHRISTINA’S STILLBORN BABY BATTLE

-

CHRISTINA Perri credits her new album with saving her after the tragic death of her daughter Rosie.

The singer gave birth to her daughter, who was sadly “born silent”, in 2020 and Christina couldn’t imagine ever returning to the music industry.

However, her forthcoming album A Lighter Shade Of Blue, which she wrote while pregnant, pulled her through and gave her a new-found purpose.

The Jar Of Hearts hitmaker told me: “After the pandemic and losing my daughter I didn’t know if I would come back to this, I really thought, ‘Why would I, when I can go live in a hut in Hawaii?’

“But then I thought, ‘My purpose might be to put this stuff in a song because I am good at explaining things people can’t say.’

“I felt a responsibility in a way, even just for mums.”

The album is an honest tale of motherhood, marriage ups and downs, love and loss – with song Evergone added after Rosie’s death.

Christina explained: “I needed to represent her on the album. But with all the other songs that were finished and ready, if they weren’t what they are I probably wouldn’t have decided to put it out.

“But because they were so honest, the songs, so healing and so helpful and I love them so much I am so grateful.

“The album saved me, it brought me out of the grief to come back to this job that I love so much.

“I am so grateful it was there waiting for me and it wasn’t just dance music, not that there’s anything wrong with dance music, it’s just not what I needed at the time.”

Christina is pregnant and says her four-year-old daughter Carmella cannot wait to be a hands-on big sister.

“Carmella is like four going on 14.

“She’s just become this little human and she’s so caring she’s like, ‘Go lay down and rest mummy.’

“She’s like a little mum!”

● Christina’s single Home is out now and the album drops July 15.
