THE girlfriend of the 15-year-old stabbed to death outside his school has spoken of her heartbreak after a teacher battled to save his life.

Khayri McLean was knifed by a masked youth shortly before 3pm on Wednesday.

Devastated Shyana James, 16, who dated him for six months, said: “Khayri was a really nice boy.

“I was in college and my friend was on a bus coming home. She phoned me and told me Khayri had been stabbed.

Trauma

“My heart just shattered. I have no idea why he has been stabbed.

“I can’t think of any reason why someone would do this to him.” Traumatised pupils at North Huddersfield Trust School told how a member of staff frantically performed CPR on the teen.

Ruben Duncan-Keane, 12, said: “I’m traumatised. I saw him lying on the floor and saw a teacher giving him chest compressions.” Alfie Wilkinson, 12, described how his friends had seen “two guys in balaclavas” hanging around the school before it shut for the day. The students went back to the scene with their mums yesterday to lay flowers in Khayri’s memory. Friends and classmates also paid tribute to Khayri on social media with one, Charley Burrows, writing: “I’ve no words. Just horrific. My thoughts and prayers go out to his mum and his family. Rest in peace Khayri.”

Sophie Vanessa said: “I can’t imagine saying goodbye to my child in the morning and then after school they have been murdered. I’m lost for words. This hurts.”

Headteacher Andrew Fell said the school was “devastated”, adding Khayri’s family had “lost a loved one” while the school had lost “a wonderful student”.

West Yorkshire Police said a 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Officers have said they are treating the attack as a “targeted incident”.
