STOUTE TONIC

Nostrum impresses trainer

SIR MICHAEL STOUTE may have found a future star in Nostrum, the impressive winner of the Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket.

Stoute, normally reserved about his runners, was positively glowing with compliments after the race.

Ryan Moore only had to push out the attractive son of Kingman with hands and heels, when beating Holloway Boy by a length and a quarter, to which Stoute said: “It was very pleasing.

“I thought it was a very warm race, but he did it very nicely the first time and was entitled to come and run in a race like that.

“It is so far so good, and you could only be pleased.”

But as expected Stoute was not dishing out future running plans for the colt, who is now 8-1 from 14-1 for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.

By contrast Charlie Appleby (right) did not hold back when referring to Adayar’s winning return to action at Doncaster earlier in the month.

“He’s King Kong again,” he said.

Appleby is undecided if last year’s Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner will be heading for the Arc or Ascot for Champion Stakes.

“He’s going to work on Saturday and if we’re happy with that work, we’ll leave him in the Arc on Monday,” he said. “Most importantly we’ll keep an eye on the ground.

“The mindset is still Champions Day, but if the Arc comes up as being sensible ground, we know at this time of year you have to go where the ground is.

“If I said I’ll wait for Champions Day and all of a sudden it’s bottomless there, I’ll be kicking myself that I’ve potentially missed an opportunity in an Arc on decent ground.”

Appleby was amongst winners at Newmarket yesterday after William

Buick partnered Bold Act (4-9) to victory in the Nursery and Dhahabi in the Stallion Book Handicap.

Buick was also on the mark with Nate The Gate (4-1) for his former boss Andrew Balding in the two-mile Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes.

Durham trainer Michael Dods made it a worthwhile trip when saddling Azure

Blue (2-1) to take the

EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap in the hands of Paul Mulrennan.

Dods took the prize last year with Gale Force Maya.
