Rat was a rock legend
BOOMTOWN Rats guitarist Garry Roberts has died aged 72.
He was a founding member of the group which formed in Dublin in 1975 and was fronted by lead singer Bob Geldof.
He’s said to have been instrumental in picking Boomtown Rats as a name after threatening to quit unless they dropped the name The Nightlife Thugs.
The Irish band said he was an “old friend and great guitarist”.
They said: “It is with a very heavy heart that the members of Boomtown Rats announce the death this morning of Garry Roberts.”
