FOOD BANK ALERT

Charity ‘at breaking point’

- ■ by NINA LLOYD news@dailystar.co.uk

THE cost of living crisis is driving food banks to “breaking point”, a leading charity says.

Almost 1.3million parcels were given out from April to September – more than ever before – the Trussell Trust said.

And one in five people referred to its network now come from working households.

In the past six months, 320,000 people turned to food banks for the first time, it added. The trust warned the service is at “breaking point” as need now exceeds donations.

Josie Barlow, of Bradford Foodbank, said a client told her “buying milk is a luxury now”.

Emma Revie, Trussell Trust chief executive, urged the Government “to act decisively in next week’s budget” to help.

A Government spokesman said: “We are directly supporting households in need.”
