WHO THE EFF WERE YOU TWO?
Chas & Dave’s name switch
CHAS & Dave were going to be called Effing & Blinding.
The duo – comprised of multi-instrumentalists Chas Hodges and Dave Peacock – joined forces in 1972 but it took them a while to settle on a name.
Before deciding to stick with Chas and Dave, the duo recorded an album as The Oily Rags – Cockney rhyming slang for “fags” or cigarettes.
And Chas’s musician son Nik Hodges revealed one of the other names under consideration was the Cockney lingo for swearing.
Nik said: “They were thinking of band names and they wanted to call themselves Effing & Blinding.
“That was actually gonna be one of the names but it didn’t come off for some reason.”
Chas & Dave had a string of hits in the 1970s and 80s, including Gertcha, Rabbit and Ain’t No Pleasing You.
They retained a cult following for decades but the double act ended when Chas died in 2018.
