Mac knifes sorry Owls

- ■ by ALEX SMITH

NATHAN JONES was given a first-hand look at the challenge he has let himself in for at Southampton as they needed penalties to get past League One Sheffield Wednesday.

Alex McCarthy proved the hero by saving Dominic Iorfa’s penalty to send the Saints through.

Welshman Jones (below) will formally be announced as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s replacement today after signing a long-term deal following a £2.5m compensation agreement with Luton.

He was in the stands as Josh Windass gave the Owls the lead by smashing past McCarthy after 25 minutes.

They were lifted in first-half stoppage time when James Ward-Prowse scored from the spot after Marvin Johnson upended Moussa Djenepo.

The hosts improved and Stuart Armstrong hit the bar in the 88th minute.
