THREE Royal Navy warships have begun patrols and mine-hunting missions to ensure security during the World Cup.

HMS Chiddingfo­ld and HMS Bangor will use sonar and underwater remotecont­rolled devices to check sea lanes in the Arabian Gulf surroundin­g Qatar.

And HMS Middleton is ready “to provide additional support if needed”.

A navy spokesman said the fleet will “make sure the world’s greatest festival of football is not ruined by a hostile act”.
