Klopp wants new cash to splash

- ■ by GIDEON BROOKS

JURGEN KLOPP believes new investment at Liverpool could allow them to compete with the biggest clubs in the transfer market.

The Kop boss says he is comfortable with new money coming in after Fenway Sports Group said they would be willing to sell a slice of the club.

Liverpool want to sign England midfield star Jude Bellingham (inset) when, as seems likely, he decides to move from Dortmund next summer. Yet a bidding war could see opening offers of £100m.

Klopp said: “In the structure we had, we were obviously able to spend money, but we always had to look and say, ‘What did we earn?’ That was always the situation, it was clear.

“The two biggest transfers we did in the past with Alisson and Virgil van Dijk (for a combined £130m) and we all know how it happened – we got some money from Barcelona (£135m for the sale of Phillipe Coutinho) and spent it wisely, I would say. “But fresh money is no mistake. Nothing gets cheaper and not only because of inflation.

Sometimes you have to spend money.

“We are happy to give all our kids a chance but around it you have to, from time to time, throw in proven quality.”

Klopp will not be in the dug-out against Southampton today after he was handed a one-match touchline ban.

The FA successfully appealed against the decision to only fine him for berating assistant referee Gary Beswick.
