Round the houses

‘OUR LIFE IN FAST LANE IS NO JOKE’

- ■ by ETHAN BLACKSHAW & HARRI EVANS

A FAMILY who have lived on a roundabout for over 40 years say it is a “bit of a challenge”.

The Howatsons reckon the biggest problems are getting on and off at rush hour and taking deliveries.

Clwyd Howatson, 64, who lives there with his wife and son, said: “When drivers are on a roundabout they don’t expect someone to come out of the roundabout itself, so we get a few double-takes.

“The road only gets really busy at peak times but getting off can be a bit of a challenge.”

Talking about deliveries to the bungalow on the Denbigh bypass, between Rhyl and Ruthin, North Wales, he added: “Normally when we give instructions it’s fine but I do end up saying, ‘No, no, we’re not BY the roundabout – we’re ON it,’ and they always sound a bit dubious until they get here.”

Previous family members David John and Eirian Howatson bought the property in 1960 when there was no roundabout there.

In the late 1970s they refused to leave when plans were submitted for it.

Clwyd added: “At least we don’t have to worry about any neighbours.”
