JULIE Andrews played nun Maria, who falls for Christopher Plummer’s Captain von Trapp after becoming governess to his children.

But there was a real Maria, a nun in Salzburg, Austria, who was asked to teach one of the seven children of widowed naval commander

Georg von Trapp in 1926. Von Trapp – 25 years Maria’s senior – soon proposed to her and the pair wed the following year. Just like in the 1965 film, the whole family was musical.

In 1938 they fled Austria to escape the Nazis and found success in the States as the Trapp Family Singers. Maria died in 1987 aged 82.
