Buddying up for a pawfect match

-

ALL guide dog puppies start their journey with the goal of becoming a qualified assistance pooch.

But some end up changing careers to be Buddy Dogs.

Although they do not have the same access rights as assistance dogs, they still have a very important job, which is helping children with sight loss.

Their role is to act as the child’s friend, grow their confidence and provide fun and friendship throughout their life.

Natalie Glew works on the Buddy Dog scheme and pairs the pups and children together. The

Canine Assisted Partnership Specialist for the Guide Dogs charity said: “Buddy Dogs tend to be loving, fun and well-behaved, but don’t reach the very high standards needed for a guide dog.”

Just like an assistance pooch, pups must be happy and confident around people, other dogs and in busy environments.

Natalie spends hours getting to know the dogs’ personalities before she matches them with the right family.

She added: “It can be very specific, but by getting to know the family and the dog really well, we can ensure the best match.”
