‘Mad Vlad to blame’
THE US and its Western allies have faced off with Russia at the UN over the deadly missile strike in Poland.
The nations squared up at the UN Security Council over the deadly blast in the Nato member state, which Ukraine initially blamed on Vladimir Putin.
Many now believe it was a Ukrainian missile, launched to defend against a Russian barrage, which went astray.
US ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said: “This tragedy would never have happened but for Russia’s needless invasion of Ukraine and its recent missile assaults against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure.”
Poland’s ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski added that the two people who died “would not have been killed if there had been no Russian war against Ukraine”. But Russia’s UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused Ukraine and Poland of trying “to provoke a direct clash
by NADEEM BADSHAH
between Russia and Nato”.
● Nations are teetering on the brink of world war amid the Ukraine crisis, says an ex-Navy chief. Former admiral Lord West of Spithead said: “Nobody wants that to happen, but mistakes and errors and miscalculations occur.”
