Evatt after basic instinct

- ■ by DAVID ANDERSON

BOLTON boss Ian Evatt has told Dion Charles to stop “overthinking” scoring to help improve Wanderers’ goal return on the road.

Promotion hopefuls Bolton have managed just six goals from their eight league away games – the second lowest total in League One.

Charles (inset) is Bolton’s leading scorer with six and Evatt feels the Northern Ireland forward would have more if he trusted his instincts in front of goal. Wanderers are at Fleetwood today and Evatt said: “I actually think a lot of them are suffering from overthinking at the moment. “Dion, for instance, is at his very best when he’s instinctive but now he’s doing other things, thinking about things, whether to shoot or pass. “Then your judgement becomes clouded and you make the wrong decision. I just want him to play instinctively.

“I want him to run in behind, I want him to be a threat in behind, I want him to hustle and harry defenders.

“Then I want him to be instinctive in the box. I think he’s come away from that instinctive nature.

“I’ve just said, ‘Let’s strip it back to basics. If you were playing with your mates in the street, what would you do?’ He said he would just shoot. That’s what I want him to do.”
