Terror in jails ‘for police’
TERRORISTS who commit offences behind bars will face tougher sentences, Justice Secretary Dominic Raab has warned.
Offences carried out inside jails are often dealt with by prison governors and many carry a maximum sentence of 42 days.
But instead they will be probed by police, and lags could face much tougher punishments.
Mr Raab said: “Terrorist offenders pose a grave risk to public safety and they must face the full consequences of their actions, whether on the street or behind bars.
“This important change means any transgression will come with the prospect of significantly more prison time and keep our communities safer, for longer, from those unwilling to change their ways.”
A review by Jonathan Hall KC, the government’s Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation, found “public confidence in the criminal justice system is shaken if terrorism occurs in prison or if people enter prison only to become more dangerous”.
