High life without money

-

MY boyfriend knows I have no spare money.

But he likes to pretend that we’re still flush. He agrees to expensive nights out without talking to me first.

He’s just added our name to a list of couples who are renting a country cottage over the New Year. Whenever I complain he snaps that: “Something will turn up.”

How do I get him to face up to how serious things are for me? My salary just about covers my rent and bills. I literally have £25 a month left over and refuse to rely on credit cards.

JANE SAYS: If he’s so keen to go away at New Year, then why can’t he pay?

Your boyfriend may feel obliged to keep up the pretence in order to impress your wealthier friends, but this is not a game.

If he is too selfish or immature to understand the seriousness of your situation, then you must stand your ground and go through this again.

Why isn’t he listening and taking you seriously?

What you cannot do is allow yourself to be embarrassed and plunged into debt. Don’t be intimidated but do question if he’s on your side.
